St Pauls
When the old St Pauls Cathedral was destroyed in the Great Fire of
London in 1667, Sir Christopher Wren was commisioned to built it's replacement.
The result is the second largest dome in the world (after St Peters in
Rome). Imagine how impressive it must have been when the only other tall
buildings around were church spires!
If you have the time and energy, you can pay to climb up the dome when
there are no service in the Cathedral. Inside the dome you first reach
the whispering gallery. It is said that if you whisper against the wall
of the gallery, a person standing on the opposite side of the dome can
hear you. Further up, you proceed between the inner and outer skins of
the dome - a fascinating insight into how the Cathedral is built - before
emerging to the wonderful view from the very top of the dome. There is
a bylaw preventing any taller buildings being built close by, so none of
the taller buildings get in the way of your view of London (and vice versa).
